2009.Spaghetti Junction

synopsis

Invited by CNA Milano, for the 2014 design week, craft and technology 'spaghetti junction' is a metaphor to the current situation between skilled craftsmen and new technologies – and how we can play between them. 2 hand crafted pieces of wood, demonstrate the natural beauty of the material worked by hand, the form from above is circular but is carved like that of a Basque pelota racquet – designed to create speed when firing the marble around the wood and through the junction.

The form of the 3d printed spaghetti junction is impossible to produce by traditional molding technologies, but only by 3d printing. These spaghetti junctions can have many forms, and users can interchange them. A user could even design their own form, and see if it works. Interacting with a common marble, it is fired by your finger, Depending on the speed of the marble, it will shoot over the other side, and back again, not knowing which exit it will appear out of the spaghetti!

Interacting with a common marble, it is fired by your finger, Depending on the speed of the marble, it will shoot over the other side, and back again, not knowing which exit it will appear out of the spaghetti! The project wants to demonstrate how Craftsmanship can be united by 3d technology in a playful format and how they can interrelate harmoniously.

The project was realized by hand by master craftsman Walter Vigano, and is available to buy online through CNA Milano.
